Working from clarity is one of the most important skills to regaining trust in our body, and most importantly, ourself. So what does that mean?

When thoughts of “I will probably hurt myself if I do that” or “I feel a bit of pain in my back so something must be wrong” or anything that starts this type of thinking… this is where we start our practice of clarity. We need to ask “Am I actually in danger of an injury at this moment?” If we are actually in danger of an injury at that moment, then we know to remove [...]

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the Body Alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

“I just want to trust my body again.” When working with clients, I hear again and again, “I just want to trust my body again.” If you have had this thought or have just felt like you can’t trust your body… or it has let you down, then just know you are not alone in this.

So how do we regain trust in our body after persistent pain, injury or stiffness? [...]

HOW TO NEUTRALIZE BLAME WHEN IT COMES TO PAIN

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

It is very common that we can feel our body has let us down when we have had an injury, constant pain, or stiffness. Who else’s fault would it be, right? It’s the one I can’t trust; the reason I can’t do anything, and I’ve tried everything to make it feel better but it just flares up anyway. It’s pretty easy to see the body as the culprit.

So why do we need to pay any attention to whose fault it is? First, when we identify the body as separate from ourself (e.g. the body as the [...]

WHAT WE NEED TO GET REALLY GOOD AT TO RELIEVE PAIN

pain relief, toronto, physiotherapy, yoga, posture, roncesvalles, little italy, college street, alignment, rehabWHAT WE NEED TO GET REALLY GOOD AT TO RELIEVE PAIN

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

Often with chronic pain and injury we get really good at spotting that part of us that is uncomfortable, that feels different than are “good side”, that “can’t do things that are good side can. And we get really good at this not just because we are in pain or there is a difference, but usually because some where inside of us we believe that if I don’t watch out for this stuff I will hurt myself even more.

Just maybe this constant thinking and monitoring of pain, and [...]

WHY DO YOGA PEOPLE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT BREATH? IS IT IMPORTANT FOR PAIN RELEIF?

IS IT IMPORTANT FOR PAIN RELEIF?

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

If you think about your most tense moment, stressful moment, you may have felt all of your body clench, no memory of breathing at that time, and immense concentration on that situation. Things like tension and our breathing let us know what kind of experience we are having. If your breath is shallow, quick, non-existent in your experience it’s likely that a sense of ease, comfort, and some relaxation are also not present. This may be a source or enabler to pain. [...]

WHY IS MY NECK ALWAYS STIFF AND PAINFUL? DO I NEED TO STRETCH MORE?

(Rachel Donen teaches Physio-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

If you have had tense neck muscles, you have probably thought or felt they need to be stretched. What else would tight and painful muscles need? Sometimes muscles do need a feeling of lengthening or opening because they are tight or feel glued. And sometimes they need to be strengthened. Often though with tight and painful neck muscles they do not need to be stretched or strengthened. Now why is that? [...]

PAIN RELIEF AND PHYSICS? WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.

(Rachel Donen teaches Physio-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

What the heck does physics have to do with pain relief? For most of us now there is an association with proper alignment and pain relief (e.g. bad posture causing problems for how we move and carry our body… and one factor causing us pain). That we get. What we might not know is that physics is actually a component of proper alignment. How?

If you think of a body that has “bad posture” and “pain” there is usually a lot of tension, holding, grabbing. The energy of the body [...]

PAIN AND BOREDOM?

(Rachel Donen teaches Physio-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

If you have experienced pain, and especially persistent pain, usually frustration is what comes to mind… not necessarily boredom. So what does boredom have to do with pain relief?

When we experience pain over and over again, it feels like all our energy is being sucked up. It’s draining. It may sometimes feel all that is good inside has been sucked out of us by having been in pain for so long. There can sometimes be a dead energy or great sadness with constant pain. [...]

I DON’T WANT TO HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE PAIN ANYMORE. WHAT CAN I DO?

ay_tiredofpain_w300px_130319(Rachel Donen teaches Physio-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

If you’ve had pain for a while, it’s likely that you have been trying to find a position or exercise or stretch or practitioner that will make it stop, feel a bit better, or just tolerable. It becomes a kind of dance of watching out for those things that might make it worse and doing the things that will make it feel better. All in all, it’s a tiring process because the pain just doesn’t go away. It becomes a lot of effort trying to cater to that part of the body every second or having to walk on eggshells so not to piss that part of our body off. Now, what if you didn’t have to do this in order for the pain to go away or so you wouldn’t be in danger of a flare-up?

Sound strange or not possible?

So, why wouldn’t you have to think about what to do for the pain all of the time? [...]

HOW DO I GET A BODY THAT IS RESILIENT AGAIN?

Toronto, Rehab, Yoga, Alignment, Physio, Pain, Roncesvalles, Little Italy(Rachel Donen teaches Physio-Rehab and the body alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain. Toronto locations: Little Italy and Roncesvalles.)

For many of us who have been in pain we want to be able to do what we please without being worried of a flare-up or re-injury. We just want to go and do. And if something does come up, we want to be able to bounce back quickly. We want to be resilient.

It is easy to know that there will be some physical training/rehab to gain this resilience. What we might not know is that there is also a mental training component that goes with re-building resilience.

So if we are going to build resilience, we will need to identify what it is. What words come to mind when you think of being able to do whatever you want, to not have to worry about injury, and to be able to bounce back quickly from any set-back? [...]
