Why come back to the breath in meditation? Or when we have pain?

Talking about meditation may not be common while working with a physio or seeing a doctor to recover from chronic pain. So why should we be interested in the breath and meditation when it comes to pain?

When we experience pain over and over again, it can be exhausting. It can be frustrating. We can feel old. Worried. We can feel depressed if we are not working or doing the things we love anymore… Just generally feel bad. […]

I keep having pain. Something must be wrong.

When we have had pain over and over again, we likely have ideas about what is causing this chronic pain. Perhaps a physiotherapist has said it is due to bad alignment or weak muscles. Maybe we think we are doing something wrong. Maybe we think we are still injured because we were injured years ago… there has to be one, right, if we keep having pain?

What we may not know is that some, or all, of this story about pain may not be true. Even though it feels otherwise. It seems like […]

I SHOULD BE BETTER BY NOW… BUT I STILL HAVE PAIN.

When we are constantly in pain we go to the doctor, or the physiotherapist, or the massage therapist… anyone who we think will help us get out of pain. Along with this physical training that we are seeking for recovery, we may not know about the mental training side of rehab needed for chronic pain relief. Let me explain…

Frustration is probably most often mentioned by my clients when they discuss their persistent pain. A common source of frustration […]

WHAT DOES LOVE HAVE TO DO WITH PAIN RELIEF?

If you have been working with a physio, chiro or your doctor to relieve pain, it’s likely you have not heard the word “love” thrown around too much 🙂 So why would we want to discuss love to help relieve pain?

Talking about the role of love in pain relief at first has more to do with relieving the suffering that accompanies pain. The frustration, any feelings of anger, judgment, and the feeling we should be something different or better than what we are right now. Sometimes we experience these feelings […]

NAMASTE. WHY DO PEOPLE SAY THIS?

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the Body Alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto location: Roncesvalles)

Likely if you’ve done a yoga or meditation class you’ve heard people say Namaste… probably not so much in physiotherapy or your doctor’s office 🙂 No matter where you have heard it, if the word Namaste does not resonate with you, you are probably wondering why is this important or meaningful. I know I was! …Let me explain.

There are many interpretations of Namaste. I remember when I first started yoga;  at the end of each class the teacher would bow while […]

I’M IN PAIN & I’M TIRED. WHAT DO I DO?

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the Body Alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto location: Roncesvalles)

It is exhausting to be constantly in pain; especially when we have been trying physiotherapy, chiropractor appointments… really anything to get better and we aren’t. Actually it’s frustrating. And it’s a bit scary not knowing when we will have a flare-up or when we don’t know why we have pain. All of this is tiring. We just don’t feel like our self anymore. So what can we do?

Along with the physical rehab, the mental training or mindfulness training can be just as important… or more so. Now for those who have […]

I WORRY ABOUT THE PAIN. HOW DO I MAKE IT STOP?

Clients will often tell me that despite seeing a physiotherapist, chiropractor, osteopath, massage therapist, and their doctor over many years… they just aren’t getting better or aren’t where they feel they should be. With all this dedication of trying to get better, still the pain continues. With this comes worry: “There must be something really wrong, will I need surgery? I need to be careful or else I’m going to hurt myself again. If I can’t do things now… what ‘s going to happen when I get older?” […]

NO TIME TO DO MY REHAB EXERCISES… BUT I WANT TO GET OUT OF PAIN. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the Body Alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto location: Roncesvalles)

When you have pain, you want to get out of it… very badly. Not only can you not do the things you love anymore, but there is no enjoyment in them because of the pain. We know we need some help to get out of this pain.

Likely you have already tried physio or you are doing it. One of the hardest things about physio can be actually doing the exercises at home to get better. Even though we so badly want to get out of pain, […]

I WANT TO GET OUT OF PAIN… BUT I’M LAZY. WHAT DO I DO?

When I work with clients, I give them exercises to do at home so that they can get stronger and feel less vulnerable. I check in with each client to see how the exercises have been going. Often I hear that the client didn’t do them, or didn’t do them very much… saying they were lazy. But often this isn’t actually true… its not usually because they are lazy… there are other barriers that need to be overcome. So what are they?

Not knowing how to do the exercise is usually the number 1 reason […]

YOGA IS, AND ISN’T, THE KEY TO BETTER HEALTH.

(Rachel Donen teaches Physical-Rehab and the Body Alignment training from Yoga to relieve Chronic Pain, Injury, & Stiffness. Toronto location: Roncesvalles)

Each person who has tried yoga… has had a different experience with it. Some fall in love. Some hate it. And some could take it or leave it. Really there is no right or wrong here in whether you practice or you don’t. Whether or not you love it or not, yoga has the potential to bring great health benefits… but its also not a requirement for better health. I know… I’m sounding very vague. Why isn’t someone like me, a “yoga teacher”, a “meditator”, a “practitioner” not just loving yoga as the best thing? Let me explain. […]
